How Much Sleep Is The Nation Really Getting?

Sleep may have become the official buzzword for 2019 and it seems we couldn’t open a newspaper last year without seeing the words ‘sleep crisis!’

It’s becoming more apparent that us Brits struggle to have a sound sleep right through the night. So, how much sleep are we really getting as a nation?

On average, UK adults are getting a mere 6 hours and 19 minutes of uninterrupted sleep each night. Despite the fact that the NHS advises we should be aiming for a solid 6-9 hours.

So, why aren’t we sleeping? It might not surprise you to learn that noisy neighbours, loud music, barking dogs and road traffic are just some of the reasons you’re being kept up at night. But it’s not only your sleep environment that’s to blame.

Busy lives, hectic work schedules and stress are the primary reasons for not getting a full eight hours rest.

Not only that but technology, a lack of exercise and eating late are also among the reasons our nation is struggling to get the night of much needed rest we’ve always dreamed of.

A study by the Independent stated that one in ten of us will check or reply to work emails, with one fifth completing admin and more than one in 20 will finish other job-related duties when in bed.

Adults will spend 38 minutes a day thinking about or finishing jobs when they should be resting – this is the equivalent of nearly 20 hours a month!

Here at Sleepeezee we understand how important sleep is to the nation’s wellbeing and that not a lot (if anything at all) is being done to help.

So this year we are focusing more on health and wellbeing and helping you to have a great night’s sleep night after night!

To kick-start, this, have a look at some of our favourite blogs from last year which all detail how to improve your sleep health.

IMM Cologne 2020

We may only be three weeks into the New Year but we have already hit the ground running here at Sleepeezee.

We attended one of the most prestigious interiors events of the year, IMM Cologne, to further enhance and strengthen our ongoing growth in international markets.

This event allows the entire interiors and export industry to gather and present product launches from around the world. This year more than 128,000 visitors attended the event to explore trends and inspiration for the upcoming year.

IMM Cologne Sleepeezee

As we did last year we were lucky enough to be included in the sought after design hall with fellow Adova group brands: Treca and Simmons Beautyrest.

To make sure we wowed visitors, we showcased two exclusive international collections of luxury beds and mattresses, which highlighted our expertise in craftsmanship, use of natural, sustainable materials and the quality of our products.

These included our export PURE and British Wool collection mattresses. Each collection has been developed to suit individual consumer needs in terms of comfort and feel, addressing different price points with a choice of authentic natural fillings and features. Not only that but the ranges showcase the Best of British by using the finest British materials and skilled craftsmanship from our dedicated team here in Rochester, Kent.

The stand design complimented our two exclusive collections by focusing on our British heritage and highlighting the time-honoured handcrafting techniques used to design and make the luxury, sustainable beds.

Andrew Thorpe, Divisional Contracts & Export Director said: “Our debut at this leading international exhibition last year proved highly successful, leading to several new overseas partnerships and we are thrilled to have been invited back this year, which has helped us develop further relationships at this show.”

As a family-run business, Sleepeezee has been handcrafting luxury beds and mattresses around the world for nearly 100 years. So with another show completed already, we are proudly looking back on another successful event and a great start to 2020!

5 Easy Ways To Boost Your Energy This Blue Monday

Blue Monday, the third Monday of the year, is the day many people agree that they hit a monumental slump and is dubbed “the most depressing day of the year”.

Whilst there isn’t any research to back it up, you can understand why, for many of us, this is the most “meh” Monday of them all: the holidays are long gone, temperatures are low and the sun is nowhere to be found.  Not only that but the next real holiday break is light-years away (Easter we see you), and we’re all realising that resolutions aren’t always so fun or easy.

Blue Monday

However this year we are all about being more positive and focusing on our health and wellbeing! So, to help you out we’ve put together some feel better tips to stop you being down in the dumps and pick you up this Blue Monday.

Go Work Out

Working out has a crazy number of brain and body benefits, including boosting happy mood chemicals, reducing stress, and alleviating anxiety. You’ll get a natural high from the release of endorphins, and your energy levels will remain high for a while after you stop exercising.

Workout Blue Monday

Treat Yourself

Self Care isn’t just laying on the couch with a facemask on. It’s the act of dedicating time and effort to treating yourself to whatever makes you happiest. So whether that’s a giant coffee on Monday mornings or an extra five minutes in bed to just stare at the ceiling, go ahead and indulge.

Eat The Right Foods

Feeling unusually tired?  Well, your diet can have a huge impact on your sleep – that’s why eating the right foods is so important to getting a good night’s kip. Head over to our blog to find out what foods you should be eating for a great night’s sleep.

Be Kind

Simple acts of kindness and politeness can improve your mental health and even reduce physical pain according to research. So give up a seat for someone, buy a stranger a coffee, help carry a pushchair up the stairs, start a fundraising event – it can all add to the positive mental attitude you need on Blue Monday.

Practice Good Sleep Habits

Establish a new and more relaxing bedtime routine, whether that means relaxing with a good book or having a nice hot bath. No matter how tempting it is, don’t take work home with you and don’t rely on a glass of red wine to unwind before bedtime!

Sleep Blue Monday

These are just a few of our tips to boost your energy this Blue Monday. Remember we’re all a bit upset the festive season is over, so you’re certainly not alone if you’re feeling a bit blue!

The Benefits of Veganuary

It’s a strange-sounding word, we admit, but Veganuary has become incredibly popular since its conception a few years ago. If you didn’t already know, Veganuary is a campaign which is set up to encourage people to try being vegan during January.

The first month of the year is commonly the time when people decide to change their eating habits in the hope of losing weight or to improve their general health and wellbeing. This is a really great way of dipping your toe into veganism and seeing what it’s like for yourself.

However we know switching to a vegan-only diet is a big commitment for many and a possibly daunting one, but adopting a vegan diet even for such a short period of time can bring the following benefits.

Vegan 2

Better Sleep Health

It’s true that the foods we put into our bodies throughout the day can positively or negatively affect how we sleep at night. Those who follow plant-based diets are more likely to get a good night’s sleep because their meals are typically made up of vegetables and legumes which are all generally easier to digest than animal meat.

Weight Loss

Vegan foods tend to be lower in calories than animal-derived ones, making it easier to achieve a healthy body weight without actively focusing on cutting calories.

Boost Your Mood

According to The Vegan Society, well-planned vegan diets follow healthy eating guidelines and contain all nutrients our bodies need. Some research has linked vegan diets with lower blood pressure and cholesterol, lower rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.

Your Skin May Benefit, Too

Who doesn’t want a glowing complexion? When it comes to skin issues, one of the worst culprits is dairy. Aside from ditching dairy, vegans typically eat more fruit and vegetables, which means they get more of the good stuff that’s needed for healthy skin, such as antioxidants and vitamins.

Environmentally Friendly

A plant-based diet is better for the planet as it requires much less energy and farmland to feed a vegan.

Vegan 3

So whether you’re following a plant-based diet or are just looking to try something new, there’s definitely an advantage to going vegan this January!

Should You Meditate Before You Sleep?

Meditation has proven to have quite a lot of physical and mental health advantages. It’s capable of enhancing your concentration, reducing stress, managing pain, lowering your overall blood pressure and improving your sleep – something very important to our team!

As a society, we’ve become blind to the critical effects sleep has on our health and well-being. Yet we wouldn’t dream of going a day without so-called essentials like coffee or our favourite snack, but having a sleepless night, is not considered a big deal

Thankfully, there are plenty of practices that can help counteract racing thoughts that just get faster when the lights go out – one of these is meditation.

Meditation before sleep

What is Meditation?

Meditation has been defined as a technique that is intended to encourage a heightened state of awareness, focus attention and relax the mind.

How Does Meditation Improve Sleep?

We fall asleep better when we are not stressed out and when there’s nothing that preoccupies our minds. It’s as simple as that.

You need to clear out your thoughts entirely and allow yourself to go to bed free of the burdens of your day. You don’t need to be an expert either! While there are advanced meditation poses and techniques, you wouldn’t have to go over your head when it comes to it. Simply shut everything off and focus yourself entirely on your body.

Meditation intends to clear your mind and, the less stressed out you are, the calmer you will be at bedtime. That’s what’s important.

Meditation before sleep

How Do You Meditate?

The process of meditating is straightforward and easy: simply sit and practice. All you have to do is close your eyes, relax and stay focused on your breathing. This is the one skill where you don’t have to strive to achieve something — just let your mind do its thing.

If you feel like you need some extra help essential oils offer the perfect environment to help you meditate.

However, if you’re new to meditation, phone apps like Headspace, Calm, and Insight can be really valuable since they have someone on the other end reminding you to come back to your breathing every so often. Many of them also come with meditations specifically designed to combat stress and evoke relaxation.Meditation before sleep

Like most things, these techniques take practice, so don’t expect to feel like a pro right away. Start by carving out a few minutes every day to practice; so that you can sleep easy and peacefully throughout every single night.

However, if you are still struggling our Brand Ambassador, Dr Ranj has put together a list of his top tips to help you fall asleep!

Do I Need To Rotate Or Flip My Mattress?

As your mattress ages over the years, you might be wondering when it’s time to flip or rotate your mattress.

All Sleepeezee mattresses come with instructions in our Product Guarantee and Care Guides – However, with all the mixed messaging out there, we understand why you may be questioning whether you need to flip or rotate your mattress!

To flip or rotate is the big question when it comes to that perfect night’s sleep because it ensures even distribution of body weight and helps prolong the life of your mattress.

As an essential part of the care and maintenance of your mattress, you need to ensure you are following the instructions provided to you by the Sleepeezee team.

Doing so will ensure that the main benefits of rotating or flipping your mattress regularly will last. These benefits include a consistent level of support and comfort, as well as reduced risk of sagging.

Rotate Mattress

How Do I Rotate My Mattress?

Rotating your mattress is quite simple and can usually be completed by one person. Before you rotate your mattress, you first need to remove your bedding and any furniture close to your bed.

Then, to rotate your mattress, simply move the head to the bottom of your bed, completing one full 180-degree rotation. A non-turn mattress must be rotated from head to foot every week for the first three months and every month thereafter.

How Do I Flip My Mattress?

You should only ever flip your mattress if it is double-sided. If it is, you must turn it every week for the first three months and once a month from there.

Just like when you rotate your mattress, you need to make sure you remove all bedding and furniture that may be in your way. You then need to:

  1. Rotate your mattress 90 degrees
  2. Raise your mattress onto its side
  3. Lower your mattress so that the top side is now at the bottom
  4. Rotate 90 degrees back onto your bed

Flip Mattress

Rotating your mattress is necessary to maintain its condition so that you can continue to enjoy a good night’s sleep, night after night. However, if you are still unsure whether it needs to be flipped or rotated, please check the label on your mattress.

When Do The Clocks Go Back and Why Does It Affect Our Sleep?

Autumn is in the air and the days are getting shorter, which can only mean one thing… we will soon be winding back the clocks!

But do you know why we do this?

Fall back

When Do The Clocks Go Back?

Every year the clocks go forward one hour in the spring, so that evening daylight lasts longer, and back again one hour in the autumn so that we can enjoy extra light in the mornings.

In case you forgot, here is your friendly reminder that the clocks will go back one hour on the morning of Sunday 27th October at 02:00. So, don’t forget to adjust the clocks throughout your home! We would also recommend that you double-check the clock on your phone, as often these automatically adjust themselves.

Why Do We Change The Clocks?

The proposal for Daylight Savings Time was put forward by William Willett in 1907.

He argued that we were wasting important daylight by rising at the same time in the summer as we did throughout the winter months (sounds like William Willet was in need of a comfortable Sleepeezee bed!)

Why Does It Affect My Sleep?

Moving the clocks forward and back so that we can seize the daylight hours more efficiently is all well and good, but did you know that this can also have a noticeable effect on our sleep?

Our internal body clock can easily be thrown off course by the one hour change, due to the change in routine, which can affect how much of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin we release and when.

Clocks Go Back

As sleep experts, we understand that the importance of a great night’s sleep cannot be underestimated. After all, it’s what drives us here at Sleepeezee.

Winding the clocks back by an hour will often have an effect on the time you naturally wake up in the morning. So, to ensure that you achieve 8 hours of quality rest each night, it’s important that your bedroom is dark, quiet and soothing enough for you to sleep in.

You can also practice these good sleeping habits to help improve the quality of your rest.
